USB was invented for personal computers, but now it is used usually for various machines, like Smart phones, video game consoles and PDAs. It also works as ‘power cord’ between a machine and an AC adapter, which is connected to a wall plug for charging. The USB design was made uniform by the USB Implementers Forums (USB-IF). Let us have a look at how to repair USB.

Before you start using your USB port, check that your system is working correctly. If your system says that ‘new hardware found’ but your system cannot use it, this means there is some problem with the driver of the system and not with the USB port. In this situation you should re-install or upgrade the system driver.
You can put in the device in another computer. If the device is working in another system, it means the problem is with your PC not with the device.
Try to reboot the system. Rebooting a system will help you to reset the entire programming to the default state and will resolve a lot of problems of your system. The start up procedure also examines all the devices of the computer and can repair a USB port.
Now, connect the USB device to another USB port on the same system. If your device is working in new port, then the earlier port maybe has a hardware or BIOS problem. Repairing a hardware issue on USB port involves working on the motherboard, which is naturally more costly than just inserting a new USB ports.
Un-install the USB device manager from your system. The device manager helps to control the USB admission and sometimes gets corrupted. Repairing the USB device manager needs administrator’s rights on the system. The ideal method to un-install the device manager is to right click on the ’system’ icon and go to properties.
By this procedure the hardware setting will appear on your system. Select the hardware button and go to device manager. The device manager has the entire list of devices on your system. The next step is to open the ‘Universal bus controller’ tab. Right click on all the items under this tab and un-install them. Once the entire device has been removed, start your system again with the USB device attached. After rebooting, re-install the USB device manager. Sometimes, it will repair the bad USB ports.
Next thing you can do is to inspect the BIOS. Restart the system and go into the BIOS net screen. Check to ensure that every USB port is working. If they are working correctly, then reset the BIOS settings to default. Sometimes, the BIOS reset will repair the bad USB port. If it doesn’t fix your USB port, then you will have to upgrade the BIOS.
Upgrading a system BIOS is very much based on the motherboard producer and you will have to go to the manufacturer’s web site for detailed information.
The next choice to repair a USB port is to repair your OS (operating system). Most of the time, the USB drivers get corrupted and it can rupture the USB ports. Re-install the system files in the machine, which should repair the USB port. The system’s data files should not get corrupted in this process; keep a full back up of the system ahead of time.
In windows, an operating system can be set up by inserting a windows installation CD or DVD and clicking on the repair ‘windows installation’ button. To install it, you will have to follow the steps given and you will be able to repair your USB ports.
